This online resource has been designed to provide information about the benefits and importance of public transportation for all Americans.

Public transportation provides greater mobility, access, opportunity and choice for all Americans.

Public transportation consists of buses, subways, trolleys and light rail, commuter trains, street cars, cable cars, van pool services, paratransit services for senior citizens and people with disabilities, ferries and water taxies and monorails and tramways.

Presently in the United States people board public transportation 34 million each week.

Ridership is growing at a faster rate that highway vehicle travel. From 1995 through 2006, ridership grew by 30 percent. Public transportation has a positive impact on the economy, communities and individuals and the environment.

In 2006, Americans took 10.1 billion trips on local public transportation, the most in 49 years.

Public transportation provides access to job opportunities for millions of Americans. Without public transportation, nationwide travel delays would have increased by 27%, costing residents in 85 urban areas and 2.3 billion gallons of wasted fuel in 2003. Access to public transportation gives people options to get to work, go to school, the doctor's office, or visit friends. Every $1 invested in public transportation projects generates from $4 to $9 of local economic activity.

Increased use of public transportation is the single most effective way to reduce America's energy consumption, without not requiring any new taxes, government mandates or regulations.

Public transportation provides an affordable choice for personal mobility and freedom for people from every walk of life. We hope you find our site developed by the American Public Transportation Association easy to navigate and the information useful as we show you how public transportation is on the move in the 21st century.
